McFall Fuel and Direct Fuel
“They were the driving force and encouraged me to enter,” he admitted. “And then I used them to review our entry … which included checking the spelling! “I think it was a positive thing to do, not only for the business but also for the staff.” The company has 50 employees and distributes fuels and lubricants throughout Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country, and Taranaki. On the night at the Tauranga Business Awards, it also won the Manufacture and Distribution Award and was a finalist in the Health and Safety Award. Of course, winning meant plenty of media coverage and a general raising of the company’s profile. However, it was the taking part that’s left as big a legacy. “It was a learning process,” said McFall. “One of the things that struck us was why we struggled to answer some questions. If we did, it meant we probably weren’t doing things quite right. So, by working that out, we were able to change a few things and make improvements – such as a customer survey, which we hadn’t done.” McFall was subsequently invited to attend the Turbo-Class workshop in Auckland – organised by Westpac for award winners. “I was most impressed,” he said. “There was lots of good information. It was very worthwhile.” He’s now looking forward to “putting a little back” after being asked to help out with judging at this year’s award. For now, though, he’s still enjoying the ‘glow’ and reflecting on the win, which he puts down to “service and structure” and “plenty of enthusiasm”. “I really think the enthusiasm of our staff and clients made an impact,” he added. “We also have very structured processes – the judges could see exactly how our strategic plan worked, and how we planned to grow and be successful. The reports we got back afterwards from them generally reinforced what we were already doing.”
