Reducing waste to landfill

Why does reducing our waste to landfill matter?
We know that as a large organisation with 5,500 staff in over 200 branches and offices across New Zealand, we have a responsibility to dispose of our waste in the best way that we can.
Nationally, New Zealanders dispose of 3.4 million tonnes of waste into our landfills every year. We want to do our bit to reduce this.
What is Westpac doing right now?
Having identified the sources of our waste we are rolling out a waste management programme
Reducing our paper consumption, setting ourselves a 20% target by 2012
Measuring and monitoring our confidential paper recycling system to minimise paper waste where possible
What can you do?
You can make a difference today by making a few changes to reduce waste at home or at work.
sort your rubbish and put into the appropriate recycle bin
buy products with minimal packaging, or if possible, without packaging
purchase reusable, refillable, repairable products as alternatives to disposable ones e.g. razors and pens
donate unwanted household items and furniture to charities, schools or second-hand shops, rather than throwing them out
don’t print out emails or documents unless you absolutely need a copy
print or copy using both sides of the paper
bring lunch to your work in reusable containers rather than paper or plastic bags
brainstorm more ideas and let us know about them.
